Simon Thomas is a partner specialising in financial restructuring and insolvency, with significant experience advising on complex domestic and cross-border situations. He acts for a wide range of stakeholders, including funds, corporate groups, lenders, investors, directors and acquirers, providing strategic advice in distressed and special situations.
His practice covers a broad spectrum of restructuring and insolvency processes, including restructuring plans, schemes of arrangement, company voluntary arrangements, pre-packaged administrations and cross-border solutions such as COMI shifts. He is regularly instructed on matters involving value preservation and recovery strategies, including contingency planning and crisis management.
Simon has worked across a diverse range of sectors, including financial services, real estate, retail, technology, healthcare, infrastructure, energy and life sciences. His experience includes advising on complex debt restructurings, acquisitions and disposals of distressed assets, and solvent reorganisations.
He is also experienced in acting on contentious restructuring situations and regularly supports clients through high-pressure and time-critical scenarios. Simon joined Eversheds Sutherland in 2026, having previously been a partner at another international law firm.

Medical Properties Trust
- BMI Healthcare Portfolio: Acting for MPT in relation to the £1.5 billion acquisition of 30 private hospitals in the largest UK real estate transaction of 2019. The portfolio’s financing had been arranged prior to the 2008 financial crisis and required a significant pre-acquisition debt restructuring.
- Circle Birmingham Hospital: Acting for MPT in respect of the insolvency of the principal contractor, Simons Construction Limited, and arranging for the completion of the hospital development by the in-coming developer Imtech.
