James is a Partner in the Competition, Trade and Foreign Investment practice group in London and leads the International Trade practice.
He advises on all aspects of international trade, including on contractual rights and obligations, export controls and economic trade sanctions, import tariffs, product classification (import and export), Rules of Origin, anti-dumping, countervailing duty and safeguard measures, WTO law and trade-related due diligence in the context of M&A transactions.
He has acted on numerous major international transactions requiring an assessment of the applicability of export controls and sanctions as well as providing specific advice to companies in respect of compliance.
James has significant experience in assisting clients to make voluntary disclosures in respect of infringements of export/import controls and sanctions laws and the use of duty suspension mechanisms, which have to date resulted in no further action being taken against a client or any of its directors.
James is described in The Legal 500 as having a “customer first approach”; being “readily available” with an “in-depth knowledge overlaid with commercial awareness.”
In the light of Brexit, James has been assisting global businesses in various industry sectors to assess the potential impact of Brexit on their trade-related operations (for example, the imposition of further customs formalities and trading within the WTO framework) and has advised them on potential mitigants to these and on their lobbying strategy.
Outside his practice, James is an adjunct professor in International Trade law.
