Netherlands Corporate Alert: SBI Code Overhaul: What Businesses Need to KnowSeptember 02, 2025 A Major Update Is ComingBetween 5 and 7 September 2025, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KVK) will implement a large-scale update to the SBI codes—short for Standaard Bedrijfsindeling. These codes classify companies based on their economic activities and are used by a wide range of institutions, including government bodies, banks, insurers, and pension funds. While the update may appear administrative, its impact on businesses could be substantial. Why SBI Codes MatterSBI codes are not just statistical tools. They influence how your business is treated in various processes, from loan applications and insurance premiums to eligibility for subsidies and participation in pension schemes. They also play a role in collective labour agreements and automated procurement systems. An incorrect code can lead to missed opportunities or administrative complications. What’s Changing and WhyThis update is part of a broader European effort to modernize economic classifications. It reflects the evolution of the business landscape over the past fifteen years. New codes are being introduced for emerging sectors such as cryptobrokers, dropshippers, and meal delivery services. Existing categories are being refined—for example, the automotive sector will now be split into wholesale, retail, and repair. Outdated categories like video rental stores are being removed, and distinctions between online and physical retail are being blurred. The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) will gradually integrate these changes into its datasets between 2026 and 2029, affecting over 170 statistical series. What Businesses Should DoAlthough the KVK will automatically assign new codes based on the activity descriptions currently on file, businesses are strongly encouraged to verify that those descriptions are still accurate. If your description is outdated or vague, you may receive a code that doesn’t reflect your actual operations. This could affect your access to permits, financing, or insurance. To check or update your activity description, log into the My KVK portal or, alternatively, reach out to your contact at Eversheds Sutherland. The Risks of InactionRecent research by the KVK shows that nearly 30% of entrepreneurs don’t know what activities are listed under their registration, and almost half are unaware of how SBI codes are used by external parties. This lack of awareness could lead to serious administrative and financial consequences. Taking a few minutes now to verify your SBI code could save you from costly complications and ensure your business is accurately positioned in the evolving Dutch economy. Latest News
